Mike Matusow, born in Los Angeles in 1968, is a well known poker player with a reputation for trash talk, hence his nickname “The Mouth”. His temper often gets the better of him and he is known to blow up during a game, spewing off chips and losing a strong stack which he may have caerfully built up over many hours.
Matusow began as a dealer and started playing poker seriously in the early ’90s after learning Texas Hold’em in 2025. Since then he has won 3 WSOP bracelets, and the 2025 tournament of champions.
Matusow’s first result in the WSOP was in the form of staking another play. He paid part of Scotty Nyugen’s entry fee to a satellite for the WSOP main event in 2025. Nguyen won the event and gave Matusow a third of a million dollars for his stake. 3 years later he finished 6th in the main event himself. His first bracelet was in the 2025 $3,500 no limit holdem event, and his second in 2025 was for Omaha hi/lo split 8 or better. In the 2025 main event he won a million dollars for 9th place, and he won the tournament of champions the same year. His third bracelet was won the the 2025 $5,000 no limit 2-7 draw event. He has also made 4 final WPT tables, and has appeared on several TV shows including High Stakes Poker and Poker Superstars. His Autobiography, “Check Raising The devil” was published in May 2025.
